Study Reveals Factors Impacting Adolescent Menstrual Hygiene Practices

In a cross-sectional study conducted in Dale Woreda, Sidama, Ethiopia, researchers delved into the menstrual hygiene practices and associated factors among adolescent primary school females. The study aimed to shed light on the prevalent issues surrounding menstrual hygiene management among young girls, a topic often overlooked in low-income countries. The lack of proper information and resources often leaves teenage girls unprepared as they navigate through puberty. The study encompassed a sample of 608 adolescent female students, utilizing a structured questionnaire and a logistic regression model for data analysis.

The findings revealed that 28.4% of adolescent girls exhibited poor menstrual hygiene practices. Factors significantly associated with poor menstrual hygiene management included the girls’ knowledge levels, mothers’ educational background, fathers’ occupations, and the presence of hand washing facilities. Girls with inadequate knowledge about menstruation were more likely to practice poor menstrual hygiene. Moreover, the educational levels of mothers played a crucial role, with higher education levels correlating with better menstrual hygiene practices. Fathers’ occupations as private employers or daily laborers were also linked to poorer menstrual hygiene practices. Additionally, the availability of hand washing facilities during menstrual pad changes had a significant impact on promoting better hygiene practices.

The study highlighted the critical need for targeted interventions to raise awareness among adolescent girls, provide adequate menstrual hygiene management facilities, and improve the educational and occupational statuses of parents. By addressing these factors, communities can work towards enhancing the overall menstrual health and well-being of young girls. This study contributes valuable insights into the challenges faced by adolescent girls in managing their menstrual hygiene and underscores the importance of comprehensive support systems to empower them during this crucial phase of their lives.
