Study Reveals Menstrual Health Challenges for Female Athletes in Bangladesh

Menstrual health and hygiene are crucial aspects of female athletes’ well-being, particularly in physically demanding sports like those in Bangladesh. Despite global efforts, many girls and women lack access to proper menstrual hygiene facilities, impacting their performance. This study delves into the challenges faced by adolescent female athletes in Bangladesh regarding menstruation management and athletic performance.

The research design employed a qualitative approach, focusing on understanding the lived experiences of adolescent athletes. The study took place at the Bangladesh Institute of Sports Education (BKSP), selecting 32 athletes for in-depth interviews and two focus group discussions segmented by age. Key informant interviews were also conducted with coaches and administrative staff to gather comprehensive insights.

The study revealed that sociocultural taboos and misconceptions significantly affect menstrual management practices among athletes. Physical challenges such as discomfort, irregular cycles, and limited access to menstrual hygiene products contribute to increased absenteeism from training. Psychological impacts, such as concerns about reproductive health and inadequate guidance on oral contraceptive pills, further complicate the situation. Both athletes and coaches expressed a need for better education and resources.

Addressing menstrual management challenges for adolescent female athletes requires a comprehensive approach. Enhanced knowledge and awareness, improved access to menstrual hygiene products, and targeted education for athletes and coaches are essential to enhance menstrual management and athletic performance. Initiatives should include systematic menstrual health education programs, improved access to hygiene products, and the appointment of female medical professionals to provide personalized guidance.

The study underscores the importance of addressing socio-cultural barriers, fostering open communication, and implementing institutional policy reforms to provide structured support for adolescent female athletes. By tackling these challenges and implementing sustainable solutions, sports institutions can ensure the well-being and optimal performance of female athletes in Bangladesh and beyond.
