A Yakima-based nonprofit, Freedom Kits of Yakima, is making a significant impact in the fight against period poverty by providing handmade feminine hygiene kits to women and girls in need. These kits, which are designed to last for several years, contain essential items such as underwear, pads, guards, washcloths, and soap, all neatly packed in a cinch sack. The organization’s mission of empowering women and girls through access to proper hygiene products has garnered support and participation, growing from 20 members in 2022 to 80 members currently.
Stephanie Wilson, the president of Freedom Kits of Yakima, highlighted the multifaceted benefits of these kits, emphasizing their positive effects on health, the environment, and the economy. Wilson shed light on the challenges faced by girls in regions where access to feminine hygiene products is limited, citing instances where girls resort to unhygienic measures due to social taboos and lack of resources.
Through its efforts, the nonprofit has distributed tens of thousands of kits globally, with nearly 4,000 kits donated this year alone to 12 different countries at no cost to the recipients. Wilson’s personal experiences in high school, where she faced discrimination based on her gender, have fueled her dedication to supporting disadvantaged girls around the world.
