The Country Fire Authority (CFA) is taking significant steps to enhance the comfort and hygiene of its female volunteers. Additionally, over 3,100 CFA vehicles have been equipped with feminine hygiene packs containing thousands of tampons and pads.
Paul Santamaria, CFA’s General Manager of Infrastructure Services and an active volunteer, emphasized that these initiatives were largely shaped by extensive consultations with women volunteers. Through various events, forums, and working groups, CFA has fostered open dialogues to embrace diverse perspectives and address the requirements of all volunteers. A comprehensive review of CFA facilities and design standards has been conducted to ensure inclusivity, safety, and respect for all members.
The efforts to create gender-neutral fire stations and training campuses are underway to provide enhanced privacy and comfort for all members. Noteworthy advancements include the entry of two women mechanical apprentices into traditionally male-dominated roles within the district mechanical workshops, setting a precedent for gender diversity in the industry.
During a celebratory event at Malmsbury Fire Brigade, Captain Linda Krive expressed gratitude for the feminine hygiene packs and eagerly anticipated the forthcoming personal protective clothing designed for women. These initiatives have positively impacted the wellbeing of female volunteers, ensuring they have essential resources during demanding situations, such as deployment on strike teams.
Recognizing the challenges faced by women with ill-fitting gear, CFA has received interest from suppliers to develop specialized boots and gloves for women. The upcoming tender process aims to secure a partner to provide tailored protective clothing that accommodates diverse body shapes and sizes, addressing issues like small glove sizes and narrow shoe widths.
The Diversity and Inclusion Program at CFA continues to prioritize individuality and inclusivity, collaborating with the Champions for Change Network to share insights and best practices across emergency services and allied health sectors.
