Making a difference in the lives of young women in developing countries, Carolyn Walker, from Riddells Creek, Victoria, initiated the Macedon Ranges chapter of Days for Girls. Motivated by the challenges faced by women globally, especially in accessing adequate menstrual hygiene products, Walker took action to provide reusable period kits to those in need.
These kits offer a sustainable solution, designed to last for years when properly maintained. The Days for Girls organization not only distributes these kits but also prioritizes educating communities about menstrual health and hygiene. By empowering women with knowledge and resources, the program aims to break the stigma surrounding menstruation.
Recognizing the importance of sustainability, Walker collaborated with the Macedon Ranges Friends of East Timor group to deliver period kits to young girls in East Timor. Fran Wigley, chair of MRFOET, witnessed firsthand the impact of menstruation on girls’ education and well-being in remote villages. By providing these kits, the initiative aims to keep girls in school and ensure access to essential hygiene products.
Efforts to promote sustainability extend beyond mere donations. The goal is to teach local communities how to produce these kits independently, fostering self-reliance and creating a sustainable business model. By involving communities in the production process, the initiative aims to address long-term menstrual hygiene challenges.
Despite challenges posed by the pandemic, the Macedon Ranges Days for Girls team continues its work, producing hundreds of kits annually. While sewing days have been disrupted, the team has adapted by sewing from home, ensuring the continuity of their mission. The project not only provides tangible support to women in need but also fosters a sense of community and purpose among volunteers.
Through these efforts, the Days for Girls volunteers are not only sewing period kits but also sewing connections and friendships. The shared goal of supporting women in need unites volunteers from diverse backgrounds, offering a sense of purpose and camaraderie. In addition to addressing a critical need for menstrual hygiene products, the initiative serves as a platform for like-minded individuals to come together for a common cause.
By shedding light on the challenges faced by women in developing countries regarding menstrual hygiene, initiatives like Days for Girls play a crucial role in empowering women and breaking the taboos surrounding menstruation. Through education, sustainable solutions, and community engagement, these programs aim to improve the lives of women globally and ensure that menstruation is not a barrier to their health, education, and dignity.
