Women have long been advised on the importance of hygiene, extending beyond basic practices like brushing teeth or regular bathing. Some opt for feminine wash products to maintain cleanliness in intimate areas. These over-the-counter options, also known as vaginal wash or intimate wash, are often used daily. But is this frequent use advisable?
Dr. Astha Dayal, an obstetrician and gynecologist at CK Birla Hospital, Gurugram, sheds light on the topic. Feminine wash products are designed to clean the external genital area, promoting hygiene, infection prevention, and odor reduction. While suitable for the vulva, they should not be used internally to avoid disrupting the vagina’s natural pH balance and beneficial bacteria.
Despite daily bathing with soap or shower gel, employing feminine wash products regularly can upset the vaginal flora, potentially leading to irritation, infections, or allergic reactions. Overuse may even sensitize the skin to these products. As such, moderation is advised, with no specific age requirement for initiating their use, typically coinciding with the onset of menstruation and increased hygiene awareness.
Some women may experience adverse effects from feminine wash, such as vaginal irritation, itching, dryness, or allergic responses due to harsh chemicals or fragrances. Excessive use can disturb the vaginal microbiome, increasing the risk of infections or inflammation. Discontinuing use and seeking medical attention if symptoms persist is recommended.
While feminine wash products play a role in vaginal health, they are not the sole means of maintaining it. Dr. Dayal suggests additional practices for optimal vaginal well-being. Daily washing with mild, pH-balanced, fragrance-free soap, wearing breathable cotton undergarments, practicing safe sex, following a balanced diet, staying hydrated, and avoiding scented genital products contribute to overall vaginal health.
As individuals seek ways to enhance intimate hygiene, it is essential to prioritize practices that support vaginal health without compromising the body’s natural balance. By incorporating a holistic approach to hygiene and health, women can safeguard their well-being and reduce the risk of complications associated with excessive use of feminine wash products.
