The International Cricket Council (ICC) has once again emphasized its dedication to promoting women’s health on Menstrual Hygiene Day. Recognizing women’s cricket as a key focus area, the ICC has intensified its efforts to educate and raise awareness about menstrual health among female cricketers. The aim is to encourage open discussions on topics like menstruation within team environments, aiming to destigmatize these conversations.
As part of their Menstrual Hygiene Day activities, the ICC is organizing a webinar featuring prominent figures in the cricket community, including India’s Jemimah Rodrigues, England’s Chris Guest, and women’s health advocate Dr. Sarah Zipp. This webinar, with over 350 attendees from various cricketing backgrounds worldwide, will focus on breaking down barriers related to periods in cricket.
In a groundbreaking move, the ICC conducted a comprehensive survey during the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in 2023 to understand how female cricketers experience and manage menstrual health issues. The survey revealed significant communication gaps between players and support staff, with a substantial number of players feeling that periods negatively impact their performance and training schedules.
Despite efforts to educate players on menstrual health, including previous initiatives and resources like educational videos, there are still knowledge gaps that need to be addressed. The survey findings underscore the importance of normalizing discussions around women’s health issues and fostering a supportive environment for female players.
Renowned cricketers worldwide have expressed their support for women’s health initiatives on Menstrual Hygiene Day. Jemimah Rodrigues commended the ICC’s efforts in promoting open conversations about female players’ wellness and stressed the need for increased awareness and advocacy in this crucial area.
The ICC plans to make the webinar recording available on its Online Media Zone and the 100% Cricket website, providing a platform for ongoing discussions and education on women’s health matters. By continuing to prioritize women’s health and well-being, the ICC aims to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for female cricketers globally.
