A community-based organization in Kenya, Young African Women Initiative (YAWI), has launched a campaign to combat menstrual stigma and poverty, aiming to enhance menstrual health, gender equality, and dignity. The initiative targets eradicating harmful stereotypes and barriers that hinder adolescent girls during menstruation, thus limiting their opportunities and perpetuating gender inequality.
Ms. Fidelis Karanja, the Executive Director of YAWI, emphasized the importance of promoting menstrual health to uphold the dignity of female pupils, ensuring they can exercise their rights without shame or discrimination. Despite menstruation being a natural part of life, stigma and misinformation continue to plague the topic, deterring girls from fully participating in society.
Challenges in managing menstruation, such as lack of access to hygiene products and inadequate facilities, further impede girls’ rights and potential. Ms. Karanja highlighted the critical role of menstrual hygiene in enabling women and girls to reach their full potential in various spheres of life, from education to the workplace.
Tragically, incidents like the 2019 case where a schoolgirl took her life due to menstrual stigma underscore the urgency of addressing these issues. YAWI’s campaign not only engages communities but also advocates for government and stakeholder involvement to bolster menstrual health policies and funding.
Menstruation, as Ms. Karanja highlighted, is a natural bodily function that requires support and understanding from both men and boys. Involving males in discussions around menstrual hygiene is crucial for dispelling myths and normalizing the topic as part of women’s health.
During a recent event at Naka Comprehensive School, YAWI distributed sanitary pads to over 300 girls and provided education on proper pad usage and disposal. The school’s head teacher, Joseph Salano, stressed the need for increased government support in providing free sanitary products in all public schools to ensure girls’ access to essential hygiene items.
Access to safe menstrual hygiene not only enhances physical well-being but also boosts mental health and school attendance, ultimately leading to improved academic performance. The lack of proper hygiene products has led many African schoolgirls to miss school during menstruation, perpetuating a cycle of disadvantage and hindering their educational progress.
Efforts to address menstrual health issues must extend beyond individual initiatives to comprehensive policies and societal changes. By breaking down taboos, increasing access to hygiene products, and fostering a supportive environment for girls and women, communities can empower females to navigate menstruation with dignity and fulfill their potential.
As the fight against menstrual stigma continues, it is evident that collective action from all sectors of society is essential to safeguarding the well-being and rights of women and girls in Kenya and beyond.
