The Victorian Government has extended its initiative to provide free access to feminine hygiene products at various venues. The $23 million program aims to support women and girls in their daily activities, ensuring they can fully engage in work, study, sports, and leisure without worrying about access to essential products.
Statistically, one in five women and girls struggle to afford necessary period products every month. Since its launch in November 2024, the program has distributed over 90,000 packs, relieving families of significant financial burdens.
Local councils in Victoria were instrumental in identifying venues for the distribution of free feminine hygiene products, ensuring comprehensive coverage across the state. The initiative has now expanded to more than 20 major venues, including sports stadiums, museums, and markets.
Minister for Women Natalie Hutchins, in collaboration with the Melbourne Vixens, inaugurated the program’s expansion at the State Netball and Hockey Centre in Parkville. The Centre, frequented by over 500,000 visitors annually, has already installed three vending machines offering free period products.
Minister Hutchins emphasized the importance of seamless access to pads and tampons, whether at a sports event or a school outing. The program’s extension to iconic venues underscores the government’s commitment to easing financial burdens on Victorian families.
The State Sport Centres Trust, represented by CEO Kate Roffey, echoed its support for the initiative, emphasizing the importance of inclusivity in sports for women and girls across all levels of competition.
Various prominent venues now offer free feminine hygiene products, including the Melbourne Cricket Ground, State Library Victoria, and Melbourne Museum, among others. An interactive map on the Victorian government’s website helps residents locate the nearest distribution points.
The collaboration between the government and venues to provide free period products reflects a growing awareness of the importance of menstrual equity and accessibility.
