Study Reveals Barriers to Menstrual Hygiene in Ethiopian Schools

In Bahir Dar city, northwest Ethiopia, a qualitative study was conducted to assess the barriers towards menstrual hygiene management among school communities. The research aimed to shed light on the challenges faced by schoolgirls in maintaining safe menstrual hygiene practices, highlighting the urgent need for targeted interventions.

The study, led by Yimenu Adane from the Ethiopian Institute of Water Resources, involved focus group discussions and in-depth interviews with schoolgirls, boy students, and leaders of the school gender club. The findings revealed several significant barriers, including sociocultural factors, inadequate menstrual hygiene management facilities, lack of knowledge before menarche, and a general lack of support. These barriers underscored the multifaceted nature of the issues faced by schoolgirls in Bahir Dar.

Menstrual hygiene management is a critical aspect of women’s health and gender equality, with implications for education, health, and social equity. However, the study highlighted the prevalence of discrimination, taboos, and stigma surrounding menstruation, hindering schoolgirls’ ability to manage their monthly menstruation effectively.

The lack of adequate menstrual hygiene facilities in schools, coupled with sociocultural beliefs and inadequate support systems, posed significant challenges for schoolgirls. The study emphasized the need for comprehensive education programs, improved WASH facilities, and access to menstrual absorbent materials to support safe menstrual hygiene practices among schoolgirls.

Addressing the identified barriers is crucial for promoting safe menstrual hygiene practices and empowering schoolgirls to fully participate in their education and community life. The study called for collaborative efforts from school communities, policymakers, and stakeholders to create a supportive environment conducive to addressing these challenges.

Overall, the study provided valuable insights into the barriers faced by schoolgirls in Bahir Dar regarding menstrual hygiene management, highlighting the need for targeted interventions and comprehensive approaches to address these challenges effectively. By raising awareness and advocating for supportive policies and infrastructure improvements, the study aimed to contribute to enhancing menstrual hygiene practices and promoting gender equality in school settings.
