Study Reveals Surge in Hygienic Menstrual Practices Among Indian Women

In India, menstrual hygiene practices among young women have seen significant improvements over the past years, with a notable increase in the use of hygienic menstrual methods. This shift is crucial as poor menstrual hygiene can lead to various reproductive health issues. The National Family Health Survey data from 2016 to 2021 has been analyzed to understand the spatial and temporal changes in menstrual hygiene practices.

The study reveals a 20% increase in the prevalence of hygienic menstrual practices, particularly in the use of sanitary napkins, even among marginalized groups. Factors such as geospatial attributes, awareness, education, sanitation, and economic prosperity have influenced these practices. The analysis shows that the highest clustering in menstrual hygiene practices occurs at the household level.

Media exposure and educational attainment have played significant roles in driving the increase in hygienic menstrual practices. Addressing socio-economic disparities and implementing community-level interventions, including peer-based approaches, are essential to ensure universal access to sanitary methods.

Menstruation is a vital sign of reproductive health, and poor menstrual hygiene practices can have far-reaching adverse effects. Approximately twenty-three percent of Indian women aged 15–24 have poor menstrual hygiene practices. Socio-economic and demographic factors play a crucial role in determining an individual’s ability to adopt hygienic practices.

Despite the critical role of menstruation in reproductive health, it is not explicitly mentioned in the Sustainable Development Goals. However, it contributes to achieving several SDG targets related to health, education, gender equality, water and sanitation, and economic growth.

The study aims to examine the spatial clustering of menstrual hygiene practices among women aged 15–24 in India, identify socio-economic and demographic factors contributing to disparities, and provide a comprehensive understanding of the determinants influencing menstrual hygiene practices.

The research work offers insights into the evolving patterns and disparities in menstrual hygiene practices across time and space in India. It emphasizes the need for continued efforts to improve awareness, access, and adoption of hygienic menstrual practices among young women to ensure better reproductive health outcomes and overall well-being.
